Maybe they got it as a present or maybe they finally invested in an Mp3 to "keep up with the times."
The chances are good, that everyone knows an adult who is technologically-challenged and is struggling to use an Mp3 Player (or other device) to its full potential. The best gift they can receive (for Christmas, Birthday, Anniversary) is the gift of knowledge. Donate some time and teach them how to use their Mp3 player.
Use the followings steps and suggestions to be successful at reaching across the technology gap.
1. Be Knowledgeable
Before committing to teaching a potentially frustrating lesson to the technologically-challenged individual, be prepared by knowing and mastering the details of the system. If the individual is using a different device, read through the manual to assure personal knowledge of all the details. Have a solo practice session beforehand. (Getting confused or making mistakes will only confuse the "student" more). Be prepared.
2. Give a Formal "Mp3 Player Lesson" Gift Certificate
Make it official. Create a gift certificate (with an expiration date), sign it, and stuff it in an envelope for the perfect present. Follow-up with the individual to make sure they actually "cash in" the present.
3. Write it Down (before and during)
The student may nod and say they understand everything, but chances are much of what is being taught is going straight over their head. To avoid having to repeat the lesson week after week, write it all down. Come prepared with a vocabulary sheet and detailed how-to instructions with simple steps. Break it down and keep it simple. Update the materials throughout the lesson as unknown items come up.
4. Take Breaks
Organize the lesson into sections (for example: loading the software, connecting the Mp3 player to the computer, adding music, using the internet). Take a break after each section and have the student practice until they are comfortable and confident they can do it on their own.
Keep a Positive Attitude and Have Fun
It might get really frustrating, but the lesson needs to come with an attitude of patience. Keep it fun, both for the "teacher" and the "student." Start with the basics and build up from there. By using the steps above, anyone can give a very creative and useful gift to that special someone -- a gift to be remembered.
